Why Does My Watch Keep Stopping?

A quartz watch that stops usually needs a new battery. An automatic watch that stops may need to be worn or wound, or may need servicing. Magnetism, dirt, moisture or a damaged part can also cause stopping.

Quartz Watches

A weak battery often makes a watch stop, run slowly or jump the seconds. A fresh battery usually fixes it. If it still stops, the movement may need attention.

Automatic Watches

  • Low power: It may have simply run down.
  • Needs servicing: Old oil and wear slow the movement.
  • Magnetism: Phones and speakers can magnetise parts.
  • Shock: A knock can damage the movement.

What To Do

Try the simple fixes first. If the watch still stops, bring it in and we will take a look.
