What Water Resistance Ratings Mean

Water resistance ratings are a guide, not a promise for every activity. As a general rule:

  • Water resistant / 30m (3 bar)

Splashes and rain. Not for swimming.

  • 50m (5 bar)

Light water use such as washing hands. Usually not for swimming.

  • 100m (10 bar)

    Generally suitable for swimming.

  • 200m and dive watches

Made for swimming and water sports. Dive watches are built for diving.

Always check your watch manual, as each brand gives its own guidance.

Why Water Resistance Fades

  • Seals age

The rubber seals in a watch slowly wear out and lose their grip.

  • Opening the case

A battery change or repair opens the case and disturbs the seals.

  • Heat and steam

Hot showers, saunas and steam rooms are hard on seals.

  • Knocks and drops

A hard knock can shift the crystal or case back.

  • Crown left open

On screw-down crowns, the crown must be fully closed before the watch touches water.

Protecting Your Watch From Water

Push in or screw down the crown before touching water, avoid pressing buttons under water, rinse the watch with fresh water after the sea or pool, and keep it away from hot water and steam.

If you see fog or moisture under the glass, stop wearing the watch near water and get it checked quickly, as moisture can damage the movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Watch Water Resistance Testing in Gurgaon: FAQs

Where can I get my watch water resistance tested in Gurgaon?expand_more
You can visit World of Watches at Ambience Mall (DLF Phase 3), Airia Mall (Sohna Road, Sector 68), MGF Metropolitan Mall (MG Road, Sector 25) and Worldmark (Sector 65). Please call or WhatsApp first to confirm for your watch.
Can I swim with a 30m water resistant watch?expand_more
Generally no. A 30m (3 bar) rating usually means splashes and rain only. For swimming, a rating of 100m or more is generally recommended. Check your watch manual.
Does a battery change affect water resistance?expand_more
It can, because the case is opened and the seals are disturbed. If you wear the watch near water, ask about checking the seals after a battery change.
There is fog under my watch glass. What should I do?expand_more
Stop wearing it near water and get it checked quickly. Moisture inside the watch can damage the movement.
Is water resistance permanent?expand_more
No. Seals wear out over time, so water resistance should be checked from time to time, especially if you swim with your watch.
Can I wear my watch in the shower?expand_more
It is best not to. Heat, steam and soap are hard on seals, even for watches with a high water resistance rating.
