What Does 50m / 100m / 200m Water Resistant Mean?
By World of Watches •

Water resistance ratings measure how well a watch resists pressure, not how deep you can dive. As a rough guide, 30 m means splashes, 50 m is light water contact, 100 m suits swimming and 200 m and above suits snorkelling and diving, but check the brand's guidance for your watch.
A Rough Guide
- 30 m / 3 ATM: Splashes and rain. Not for swimming.
- 50 m / 5 ATM: Light water contact. Take care in the shower.
- 100 m / 10 ATM: Swimming and snorkelling.
- 200 m / 20 ATM and more: Diving and watersports, on watches built for it.
These are guides. Always check what the brand recommends for your watch.
What Reduces Water Resistance
- Age: Gaskets harden over time.
- Knocks: A hit to the crown or case can break the seal.
- Heat and steam: Hot showers and saunas can damage seals.
- Opening the case: A battery change affects the seal unless it is tested.
Keep It Tested
If you swim with your watch, have the seals and water resistance tested every year or two.
