How Often Should You Service a Watch?

Mechanical watches are commonly serviced every three to five years, though some brands advise longer. Quartz watches need a battery change every few years and a check of the seals. Follow the brand's guidance, and bring a watch in sooner if it runs badly.

Mechanical Watches

The oil inside a mechanical movement ages and dries. A service cleans the movement, replaces oil and checks wear. Without it, parts can wear faster.

Quartz Watches

Quartz watches need less. Change the battery every few years, and ask for a seal check each time if you wear the watch near water.

Signs You Should Not Wait

  • Large changes in accuracy: A watch gaining or losing a lot of time.
  • Stopping: The watch stops for no clear reason.
  • Moisture: Fog under the glass.
  • Noise or roughness: Any grinding or rattle.
