How to Set and Wind an Automatic Watch

To start an automatic watch, give the crown a few turns to wind it, pull the crown out and set the time, then push it back in. Wear it daily to keep it running. Avoid changing the date between about 9 pm and 3 am unless the brand says it is safe.

Starting It Up

Turn the crown clockwise about 20 to 30 turns to wind it, or shake it gently. It will then run as you wear it.

Setting The Time And Date

  • Pull the crown out: Often to the second position for the date and the third for time. Check your manual.
  • Set the time: Turn past noon to see the date change at midnight.
  • Push it in: Push or screw the crown fully back.

Good Habits

Wear it regularly, avoid changing the date between about 9 pm and 3 am, and have it serviced every few years.
