What Is an Automatic Watch?

An automatic watch is a mechanical watch that winds itself using the motion of your wrist, so it needs no battery. A weighted rotor spins as you move and winds the mainspring, which powers the watch.

How It Works

Inside an automatic watch, a weighted rotor swings as you move your arm. It winds a mainspring, which releases energy slowly through gears to move the hands. This is the same idea as a hand-wound watch, without needing to wind by the crown every day.

Things To Know

  • Power reserve: How long it runs when off the wrist. Often 38 to 80 hours.
  • Accuracy: A few seconds a day either way is normal.
  • Winding: Wear it daily or give it a few turns of the crown if it has stopped.
  • Servicing: Every few years, as advised by the brand.

Automatic Or Quartz

Automatic watches appeal to people who enjoy craft. Quartz watches are more accurate and need less care. Both are good choices.
