How to Choose the Right Watch Size

The right watch size depends on your wrist, not just the case number. Check the case diameter, the lug-to-lug length (the lugs should not hang over your wrist), and the thickness. As a rough guide, many men wear 38 to 42 mm and many women wear 26 to 36 mm.

Measure Your Wrist

Wrap a soft measuring tape or a strip of paper around your wrist just below the wrist bone, then measure it. This helps you compare watch sizes and plan how a bracelet will fit.

Case Diameter

Case diameter is the width of the watch, usually in millimetres, not counting the crown. As a general guide:

  • Smaller wrists: Often suit about 34 to 38 mm (men) or 26 to 32 mm (women).
  • Average wrists: Often suit about 38 to 42 mm (men) or 30 to 36 mm (women).
  • Larger wrists: Can carry 42 mm and above.
  • Personal taste: Some people prefer a bolder or smaller look, and that is fine.

Lug-To-Lug Length

Lug-to-lug is the distance from the top lugs to the bottom lugs. If it is longer than the top of your wrist, the watch overhangs and looks too big, even if the diameter seems right. This is why two watches with the same diameter can fit very differently.

Thickness

A thin watch feels smaller and slides easily under a shirt cuff, which suits dress watches. Sports and dive watches are often thicker, which is normal for their build.

Fitting The Bracelet

A metal bracelet should be snug but comfortable, with room to slide a finger under it. Wrists can swell in heat, so a little room is usually better than a very tight fit.
